The Australian STAR Rating Scheme
In Australia, the renowned quality certification scheme for the Australian accommodation industry is known as the Australian STAR Rating Scheme. The Scheme provides certification of STAR Ratings for over 11 000 accommodation properties located throughout Australia, and is managed by an independant company owned by Australia’s Auto Clubs, The AAA Tourism Pty Ltd (AAAT).
The Australian STAR Rating Scheme independently rates accommodation between one to five STARS based on the facilities and amenities in bedroom, bathroom and communal areas, together with the level of maintenance, cleanliness and appearance of the property.
The STARS are registered Australian Certification Trade Marks of AAA Tourism. The accompanying STAR Rating Scheme and Rules of Use have been approved by the ACCC. As such, AAA Tourism has the exclusive right to use (and authorise others to use) the STARS in relation to the registered temporary/holiday accommodation services, and services of the same description or closely related services. This means that only accommodation providers providing such services that are members of the Australian STAR Rating Scheme, are licensed to use STAR Ratings in their advertising and promotional material.
There is no Self-Rating specification provided under the official STAR Ratings Scheme, and therefore any advertised 'Self-Rated' score has no comparison to a registered and independantly assesed STAR rating.
The Green STAR Rating Initiative
Green STARS is a new initiative to provide companies with recognition for embracing and achieving practical environmental standards. To be awarded Green STARS properties must achieve adequate points against a set of practical environmental criteria including energy efficiency, waste minimisation and water management. Practices such as optional reuse of linen (for multi-night stays), or usage of energy efficient light bulbs and fixtures are easy for guests to relate to.
A green STARS rating does not change the actual rating of the accommodation. The number of stars is a direct correlation to the same rating standard as a normal STARS rating, however a green STARS rating may be allocated to differientiate between accommodation that has environmentally friendly practices and one which does not.
